STINSON MODEL U “EXECUTIVE” NC12196

"CITIZEN KANE" SOLD INTO COSTA RICA

This tri-motor transport airplane is a Stinson Model U “Executive” (S/N 9023; ATC #484) manufactured on June 28, 1933 by the Stinson Aircraft Corporation, Wayne, MI.   It left the factory with three Lycoming R-680 BA engines (S/Ns L 2-838; R 2-833; C 2-839) of 240 HP each.  It was an eight-place airplane (two pilots), weighing 9,400 pounds gross.

It sold on June 26, 1933 to the Examiner Printing Company, San Francisco, CA.  It had a special interior installed for use as transport of San Francisco Examiner and Hearst newspaper executives. NC12196 landed at Tucson on April 2, 1934.  It was piloted by Ray Crawford carrying one passenger whom he identified as “crew”.  The Register states that the airplane was based in Glendale, CA at the time, although the NASM record does not mention any ownership entity that might have based it there.  Regardless, Crawford and crew were westbound from Ft. Worth, TX to Glendale.
