CHICAGO AREA AIRFIELDS

Much like Los Angeles, or any major city for that matter, a pilot of the register citing Chcago as a homebase or destination could have meant any number of local airfields.

ASHBURN FIELD

Ashburn Field was located at 83rd Street and Cicero Avenue. The link will give you some background and early photos of the field. During the Golden Age, it was the site of the E. M. Laird Airplane Co. at 4500 W. 83 St.

The image above, from Streets and Trips, shows the approximate location of Ashburn Field on West 83rd St. during the period of the Davis-Monthan register. According to descriptions, the property extended west to the corner of 83rd and Cicero Ave.

Today, the southwest Chicago neighborhood has taken over, and the former field is just a few hundred yards east of the local Panda Hut restaurant. The Ashburn name remains in the neighborhood, however, as Ashburn Park on 83rd St. about 1.5 miles east of the old airfield site.

I'm accepting information on Ashburn Field and other Golden Age Chicago airports. If you have information, especially photographs, please use this FORM to share.
