"Winners' Viewpoints: The Great 1927 Trans-Pacific Dole Race" is available at the link. Or use this FORM to order a copy signed by the author. For the first time ever, this book presents the pilot and navigator's stories written by them within days of their record-setting adventure. Pilot Art Goebel and navigator William V. Davis, Jr. take us with them on the Woolaroc, their orange and blue Travel Air monoplane (NX869) as they enter the hazardous world of Golden Age trans-oceanic air racing. ISBN 978-0-9843074-3-2.

WEBSITE:

05/04/10 This year is a major anniversary year for the Davis-Monthan Airfield effort. Namely, today is the fifth anniversary of the Web site www.dmairfield.org. There are biographies of 304 (+22% this year) Golden Age pilots and passengers, technographies of 444 (+11%) of their aircraft, descriptions of 33 airfields (+7%). There are 13 moving picture sequences online (vs. 9 last year). The site now contains 7,133 files (up 24% in one year), 3,041 folders (+10%), and it is 1.52GB in size (+18%). There have been 275,425 visits (about 36% are returning visitors) to the site in the past five years (+52% this year), with over 7.9 million page hits. An additional 35 email contacts were made by relatives of pilots and passengers who signed the Register. This makes a total of 154 relatives over the five years.

Likewise, 2010 marks the tenth anniversary of your Webmaster's labors on behalf of the Register that is the focus of this Web site. I acquired a copy of the Register in a used book store in Alexandria, Virginia on June 13, 2000. The book changed my life by catalyzing a project that is at once persistent in its attractiveness and productive in its yields. The project has occupied much of my time for the last decade, and the research, data-analysis, and writing have taken me into many dusty archives, museums, old barns, libraries, private homes, workshops and airfields. The project has yielded four books, several journal articles, many invited presentations, and this Web site. Best of all, along the way I've met a lot of great people. I'm looking forward to the next decade with great anticipation.

09/18/09 Propellers of another type: The host service for this Web site is "green". The company, in the Boston, MA area, operates over 800 servers and offsets all electricity use for computing and office infrastructure with wind-generated Renewable Energy Certificates. This prevents the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year.

05/04/09 Today is the fourth anniversary of www.dmairfield.org. There are biographies of 267 (+22% this year) Golden Age pilots and passengers, technographies of 429 (+6%) of their aircraft, descriptions of 31 airfields (+11%). There are nine moving picture sequences online. The site now contains 6,156 files (up 20% in one year), 2,740 folders (+19%), and it is 1.24GB in size (+37%). There have been about 129,875 visits (about 30% are returning visitors) to the site in the past four years (+21% this year), with over 5.3 million page hits. An additional 31 email contacts were made by relatives of pilots and passengers who signed the Register. This makes a total of 115 relatives over the four years.

04/01/09 Total visits to dmairfield.org were 8,268 in March. Another record high. Thanks!

03/01/09 Total visits to dmairfield.org were 7,321 in February. Another record high. Thanks!

01/04/09 Total visits to dmairfield.org were 7,028 in December. That’s the most visitors for any month since the site went global on May 4, 2005. The previous high was 6,692 in November, 2008. Thanks, everybody.

12/03/08 Total visits to dmairfield.org were 6,692 in November. That’s the most visitors for any month since the site went global on May 4, 2005. The previous high was 6,012 in July, 2008. Thanks, everybody.

08/01/08 Total visits to dmairfield.org were 6,012 in July. That’s the most visitors for any month since the site went global on May 4, 2005. The previous high was 5,737 in September, 2007. Thanks, everybody.

05/04/08 Today is the third anniversary of www.dmairfield.org.  There are biographies of 218 (+35% this year) Golden Age pilots and passengers, technographies of 406 (+26%) of their aircraft, descriptions of 28 airfields (+14%). There are nine moving picture sequences online.  The site now contains 5,145 files (up 31% in one year), 2,303 folders (+30%), and it is 904MB in size (+26%).  There have been 107,416 visits (about 26% are returning visitors) to the site in the past three years (+23% this year), with over 2.6 million page hits.  An additional 28 email contacts were made by relatives of pilots and passengers who signed the Register.  This makes a total of 84 relatives over three years.

03/03/08 Ten new navigation buttons were added to the top of each web page. Privacy Policy updated.

02/19/08 www.dmairfield.org is now a tax-exempt, public charity in accordance with U.S. Internal Revenue Code 501(c)3.  Your contributions to Delta Mike Airfield, Inc. are deductible under section 170 of the Code.

05/04/07 Today is the Second Anniversary of www.dmairfield.org.  Our second year was very productive.  The power of the world-wide web is alive and serving well the purposes of the history of our Golden Age of Aviation!

To-date, on www.dmairfield.org, there are biographies of 141 Golden Age pilots and passengers, histories of 302 of their aircraft, descriptions of 25 airfields, and seven moving picture sequences online.  These all document activities related to the Davis-Monthan Airfield between 1925 and 1936.  The site has grown.  It now contains 3,542 files (up 41% in one year) in 1,602 folders (+43%), and it is 669MB in size (+72%).

There have been 57,320 visitors to the site in the past two years (+60%).  An additional 26 contacts were made with your Webmaster by relatives of pilots and passengers who signed the Register.  This makes a total of 56 relatives over two years who, through the World-Wide Web, have “found” their kin in the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register.  What’s more, these relatives have provided unique images and information that enhance the biographies of their kin on the site: the kind of information you don't find in the history books. My personal thanks to all of them (you know who you are).

An article was published in the 50th Anniversary volume of the Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society last spring describing the operations of Standard Air Lines through Tucson during the late 1920s.  You may download that article here.

Separately, an e-commerce website, www.oldairfield.com, was officially brought online January 2, 2007.  Profits from oldairfield.com are directly donated to support the research activities and web hosting for dmairfield.org.

Among the range of products available at oldairfield.com, three books have been published this year about the people, airplanes and events documented in the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register.  Purchase of these books, likewise, supports the research and maintenance of dmairfield.org.  They are available for your enjoyment at these links:

1) “The Register of the Davis-Monthan Airfield 1925-1936”.  This book contains clear copies of all 218 pages of the Register, as well as three chapters of cross-reference tables arranged alphabetically and numerically that make it simple to identify and find individual pilots and aircraft.

2) “Art Goebel’s Own Story” by Art Goebel.  This autobiography of a Register signer provides insight into the aviation, logistical and entrepreneurial skills of pilot Art Goebel.

3) “Military Aircraft of the Davis-Monthan Airfield 1925-1936”.  This book examines 850 landings by military aircraft at the Airfield.  It provides biographical insight into the lives of some of the pilots, as well as black & white photographs of their airplanes.

05/04/06 Today is the First Anniversary of this website. To-date there are biographies of 107 pilots/passengers, histories of 256 aircraft and descriptions of 25 airports online. July, 2009 As of January 31, 2010, I find that about 30% of my effort to maintain dmairfield.org is now spent adding visitor-contributed items to pages that already exist. This is not surprising, because as I add more new biographies of people and technographies of aircraft to the site, the more "hits" are delivered by search engines to potential site visitors ("Build it and they will come.") I very much appreciate all the communication and sharing of information and photographs by visitors, and I honor their contributions by including them as quickly and efficiently as possible. Thus, the time happily spent updating. My point is this: From now on, I will maintain a record of those additions in this section of changes that are older than six months before present. That way, you'll be able to keep track of additions and changes to existing pages, as well as additions of brand new biographies and technographies.
