For the first time ever, this book presents the pilot and navigator's stories written by them within days of their record-setting adventure. Pilot Art Goebel and navigator William V. Davis, Jr. take us with them on the Woolaroc, their orange and blue Travel Air monoplane (NX869) as they enter the hazardous world of Golden Age trans-oceanic air racing. ISBN 978-0-9843074-3-2.

ABOUT YOUR FREE BOOK: Art Goebel is a Register pilot who, in August, 1927, flew a Travel Air 5000 across the Pacific Ocean from Oakland, CA to Honolulu, T.H. He shared responsibilities for the flight with his navigator, William V. Davis, Jr. Their flight was a BIG DEAL back in 1927. The book tells the story of the flight from Goebel's point of view. The story of the Dole Race from the perspectives of both pilot and navigator is available in "Winners' Viewpoints" described at left.

Below is the book description your Webmaster made available during Sun 'n Fun's "Author's Corner" at Lakeland, FL during April, 2010.

Author: Hyatt, G.W. 2007. Art Goebel’s Own Story by Art GoebelCafePress.com. Louisville, KY. 82 pages. ISBN 978-0-9843074-1-8.

Genre: Aviation, Historical Biography

Paperback: 82 pages

Synopsis: This book is a complement to the aviation history Web site known as www.dmairfield.org.  The Web site celebrates the pilot transient Register from the Davis-Monthan Airfield, Tucson, AZ that lay open for pilots and passengers to sign between February 6, 1925 and November 26, 1936.  Recorded in the Register are 3,689 landings by 1,962 unique pilots, flying 2,129 unique aircraft.  They carried 2,061 unique passengers.

"Art Goebel's Own Story", an Oldairfield.com® Books 21st Century Edition, is an autobiographical vignette cast around the life of one pilot from the Golden Age of Flight. Arthur C. Goebel was born October 19, 1895; he died in Los Angeles, CA at age 78 on December 3, 1973. Edited by G.W. Hyatt, none of Goebel’s words have been changed in this edition. From Foreword to Chapter Eleven the story, typeset and images are faithful reproductions of Goebel’s original 1929 book. Goebel's is the language that dilates for us the life of the Golden Age aviation entrepreneur, who used his aviation exploits to build a business around his passion.

We also get to see what things were like. His book brings us 47 black and white images of people and airplanes that have not enjoyed the light of day for nearly 80 years. Your author extends the biography in his introduction and provides a summary look at the airplanes Goebel flew and the landings he made at the Davis-Monthan Airfield, Tucson, AZ between 1928 and 1931. He also provides an annotated bibliography. There you will find recommendations for, and comments about, books, magazines, newspapers and Web resources.
